A Beauty That Only Last A Day

by in North America, Photo Journal, Travel

What if someone told you that you could be more beautiful than you ever imagined, get attention from every one who sees you and be the envy of those who knew you before your transformaton. The only catch would be that you’d die the next day. I doubt many people would agree to that. But every day, millions of catepillars take the offer and magically transform into butterflies. Some of these butterflies only live for one day I was told. Nature’s cruel joke on them.

When I’m in my hometown, Columbus, Ohio, I love going to the Franklin Park Conservatory. A sprawling park and conservatory, it contains many beautiful plants and fauna from around the world, including an extensive bonzai tree exhibit. But the most popular part of the conservatory is the butterfly exhibit. Each day, the conservatory releases new butterflies to fly in the controlled space. You can’t help but be inspired by it and realize how beautiful the simplest creatures can be.

Here are photographs that I’ve taken at the conservatory that I’d like to share with you. Columbus is my hometown so it’s not a place I consider a travel destination. But perhaps you’ll find yourself in Columbus one day and if you do, be sure to visit the butterflies at the Franklin Park Conservatory. And also, cheer on those Buckeyes.

O-H-

The Franklin Park Conservatory

One of my favorite photographs that I've taken.

Preparing to release new butterflies.

Where is one place in the city/town that you live in or come from that you would tell a visitor to go see?

First off, gorgeous shots. Reminds me of the time I went to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and took almost 200 shots of just…flowers. I have a feeling I’d be the same way with the place you visited.

I would encourage people to trek out to our local beaches here in Northwestern PA. In the fall, the leaves are stunning. In the winter, the snowflakes dance among the trees. In the spring, pollen and buds fly through the air, and in the summer, the cool, crisp lake water provides a refreshing break. I love to bike, walk, stroll, or absorb this place as much as I can, and I’m sure my blog will feature more photos from here come spring.

Thank you Bethany! Do you have your photos from the BK Botanical Gardens posted anywhere? I’d like to see them.

They have beaches in PA? I don’t think I’ve ever seen the words ‘beaches’ and ‘Pennsylvania’ in the same sentence together. Your vivid description certainly excited the senses though.
I would love to see the photos. Thank you for telling us about a place to see.

Beautiful photos! The one with the blue butterfly is so acid!:)))

      Thank you!

    I-O!

I’m not a Buckeyes fan but I have friends that are. One seemingly has Turrets and yells out “Ann Arbor’s a whore” whenever she sees a Michigan fan.

We’re all guilty of not visiting the things in our own backyard; we’ll travel half way around the world to see some small thing but then won’t visit the treasures we have close to home. I’ve yet to go to the Biltmore House although its only 3 hours away and I often “keep meaning” to go to exhibits at nearby museums and put it off until they are gone.

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Wow, your friend is something else. LOL. I give Michigan fans a tease but not that hardly.

Where is your backyard? And you are correct with us traveling half way around the world to see things but not knowing what’s in our own hometown. Guilty!

You’d enjoy the rainforest exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences here in San Francisco. The butterflies are awesome.

Q: Where is one place in the city/town that you live in or come from that you would tell a visitor to go see?

A: Oakland, CA. Despite the crime that plagues *some* parts of the city, the city is huge and there is plenty safe and exciting to see and do. You can take bona fide gondola rides on lovely Lake Merritt. Take a walk through local, California, and American history at picturesque Mount View Cemetery – designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of New York City’s Central Park, Capitol Grounds in Washington DC, Stanford University and Yosemite Park (he minimized the intrusion of man on Yosemite’s natural wonders). Or just come for the food! While Berkeley lost its Michelin Star (Chez Panisse), Oakland gained one – Commis. If fancy food isn’t your thing and you just want a little comfort, head directly to Brown Sugar Kitchen and prepare to be blown away (happily). Those are just a few ideas, but trust me, there’s a ton more. Oakland is awesome.

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

You always provide great links, especially to food, thank you Marissa!
Ooooh I’ve heard a lot about Brown Sugar Kitchen.

Nice of you to represent for Oakland because it does get a bad rap.

      • http://marisawilliams.com Risamay

My favorite Oakland hotspot du jour is Mua. And I’m dying to try their sister site, right Nex door.

I’m also super stoked about Caña, a Cuban parlor that’s going in near where I live. I *love* Cuban food. And whatever Gary Rizzo’s up to with the old Kwik Way. His other spot – Somerset – in another corner of Oakland has the best brunch. One of my favorite spots, so I know this new venture is going to be a similar hit.

        • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

When I went to Oakland, the woman I was dating at the time, took me to a popular local area near the harbor that was filled with restaurants, bars and shops. Do you have any idea of where I might be referring to?

I also remember her pointing out a “very popular” Cajun/Creole restaurant along a major road.

          • http://marisawilliams.com Risamay

            Jack London Square, no doubt.

It got really seedy and sketch for a while, but it’s bouncing back. So if you return, it will be much changed. Lots of swank new stuff is going in and it’s much improved. Bocanova is there – a fantastic Pan-American restaurant – and lots of other good stuff is moving in as well.

Not sure what the Cajun/Creole spot you’re thinking of is.

            • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Yes that’s it, Jack London Square. Thank you!

  • bagnidilucca

Absolutely beautiful photos! I would rather just be plain old me and live for quite a while.

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

      Thank you!

Any recommended places in your town (lets say Brisbane)?

  • Chrystal

Love this Fidel. I went to an indoor Butterfly farm @ the San Antonio Zoo last year and loved it!! Bri, my youngest is scared of ALL bug so she was freaking out that they were landing on her. But, it was a marvelous adventure.

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

      Thank you Chrystal!

Awww, did she eventually warm up to the butterflies?

What not -so-popular places in San Antonio would you recommend? Is the Riverwalk as great as they say it is?

      • Chrystal

She NEVER warmed up to the butterflies. lol All bugs creep her out no matter how beautiful they are. Places in SA… Hmmm… I would say ChaCho’s is a favorite among the locals- good food and margaritas. There are a lot of hole-in-the-wall Mexican places to eat, which is my favorite thing to do/eat. The Riverwalk is bleh! I mean during the holidays it’s fun to see the lights and decor but otherwise it’s just a dirty long river; lotsa walking. I have lived in SA half my adulthood and rarely visit the Riverwalk and I think that’s true for most locals. Just a tourist attraction. Dicks is a fun place to visit though b/c they’re “dicks” on purpose; quite entertaining. Another place to visit is Magic Time Machine. I loved this place as a kid and an adult. Fun to see the waiters (esses) in character. Most of all, I love SA b/c I have great friends there and I’m usually just hanging out with them. Plus, the Hill Country is quite the sight and just off Hwy 16/Bandera Rd. If you’ve never been… it’s a must-see!!

You´ve taken really beautiful pictures!!! what a nice place to visit!!
If somebody came to my city, well, so many places I´d recomend … Puerto Madero is one of them.

      Thank you!
      What city is your hometown?

      • http://wwwanderers.wordpress.com wherewander

        Buenos Aires

        • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Ahhhh! Can you teach me how to tango?

          • http://wwwanderers.wordpress.com wherewander

            my pleasure!!! I LOOOOVE tango!!!

            • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Great! I want to tango in the streets of Buenos Aires.

Well, it would have to be 1 REALLLLYYY great day!

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Ha ha. You bet it would.

Thanks for the wonderful post, and beautiful pics! You made my hectic day a little bit better. You remind me of how we usually overlook wonders and beauties that are around us. I was suprised to read a post of your hometown, since, well, you write mostly bout other places, hehe.
Back to overlooking things, there’s a saying in my country that literally means ‘stone storms in our homeland, gold storms in others, still our homeland rocks!’ or something like that. Shows how much people don’t appreciate, or just didn’t see the beauty right in front of them. I mean, if it can ‘rain gold’ at other places, it can also ‘rain gold’ at your own place, right?

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Well thank you for such a kind comment. I’m glad that my photographs can bring a smile.

Yes, you’re right about how we can often overlook our own hometowns.

I like that quote that you shared. What country is your home country?

      • Anonymous

Malaysia. But I’d rather say I’m from Sabah rather than Malaysia. I think you’ve stopped by once before judging from one of your past post.

I-O I love the story from Jessica – “Ann Arbor’s a whore”. Be careful, that could catch on in Columbus with people claiming they have Turrets just so they can say it.

Would not pick the beauty for a day. (besides, sounds like you’d have no friends to spend it with)

Toronto – you have to see the SkyDome and the CN Tower even though they are so ‘touristy’, they really are stunning to see in person. I’d also say a walk anywhere along the Toronto waterfront – either right downtown where there are spots of wilderness or in the Beaches area where there is a formal boardwalk. Looking on a clear day, you can see the border of the U.S. across Lake Ontario. How cool is that?

    • http://3gtravel.wordpress.com Fidel Hart

Ha ha, I’m sure people in Columbus say that while they are flipping over cars with Michigan license plates.

I love the Sky Dome. I actually did the naughty there (shhh, don’t want the Mounties to arrest me). It was really nice seeing the city from that high. You’re also right about the waterfront. What is that island that is off the waterfront?
