Gelateria di Piazza in San Gimignano, Italy (Tuscany) has the world’s best gelato. I can say that because I’ve tried it and because it has been voted as such.
Sergio Dondoli is the master ice cream maker at the gelateria located in the heart of Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano. His penchant for experimenting with different flavors is part of the reason why this gelateria is world famous, visited by celebrities and mentioned in numerous guide books. Flavor creations you can try include: Crema di Santa Fina (cream with saffron and pine nuts), eggnog, Champelmo (pink grapefruit and sparkling wine), rice and cappuccino and rum.
You can immediately taste the quality and freshness in all the ingredients. On my tour with Plus Florence, every member of the tour group was raving about the gelato along with dozens of other tourists who gathered there to taste the best.
You cannot argue with the writing on the world.
With a “grazie” for the cone and a “ciao, ciao” upon leaving, you instantly feel more Italian the second your tongue licks the melting drips from your cone. Even before that, just looking at all the flavors on display makes you forget about those daily 3 miles you run or your tri-weekly spin classes.
If you are visiting Tuscany, definitely plan a day trip to the hill town of San Gimignano. You’ll find a lot of medieval architecture, especially the dozens of towers that were built by rival families.
