Weird World Wednesdays (WWW): The Legend of the Chikan

by in Japan

***Imagery in this post are not my own

The weather looks nice today (not really hot, but sunny at least), so I decided to do a round trip this morning. Took the bus and found myself in a medium crowded place. Too many guys there, though I was triangled between a pretty blond, who seemed to avoid me, an ugly blond with glasses and a cute turkish girl with a backpack. At first I decided to go after the pretty blond, but I needed to wait for a thicker crowd. The next station the blond left though, and it got really crowded. I got beneath the turkish girl, so I decided to go after her. She was standing opposite her friend, which was seated facing her, and they were talking. As she had a backpack, I couldn’t get to her rear. I tried to go for her crotch first, but this was too daring, right in front of the face of her friend, wouldn’t work out. To my amazement, she decided it was to crowded to wear a backpack, and actually took it off and placed it in front of her. So I shifted a little to the right, and positioned myself with my left hand against her buttocks. Her pants were a rather light material, but not as tight as they could have been. However, it was nice to feel her buttocks, and as the crowd moved quite a bit, I actually got to palm them a few times. She was about 5’4”, rather trim with no tits to speak of, but got a very cute face. I could feel her up for about 10 minutes, and a few times I also had my hard dick press against her. Quite a good ride!

Fear not friends. The above words are not my own. They are from the diary of a chikan. A better, similar spelled word to describe that person would be, ‘chicken.’ What kind of man gets off on touching innocent female strangers on crowded public transportation? In Japan alone, more than 4,000 men are arrested a year for groping on public transportation. Those are just the ones who are caught! In a society where men have long been dominant and women are told to be docile, imagine how many thousands of chikan go unpunished yearly in Japan.

Nearly all trains and subways in Tokyo are packed during rush hours. Men and women who work for the rail lines wear white gloves and gently push commuters tighter and tighter into the trains, packing us like sardines. These are the trains that the chikan love. What better time to grope a stranger then when you barely have room to move your hands to begin with?

When I see this, I usually wait an hour before getting on trains.

If you’re a non-Japanese reader here, you may think that you are safe from a chikan if you’re visiting Japan. Think again. Foreigners are increasingly becoming targets for chikan according to studies in Japan. If you find yourself in the grip of a chikan, here are some steps you should take:

1. If possible, avoid rush hour trains on lines that are popular routes for students. Chikan are sick enough to also touch underage girls. The Odakyu line is popular for female students and is known as a top chikan line. The Inogashira line is popular for young women going to Shibuya- the most popular place in Tokyo. Avoid those trains during rush hours to lower the probability that a chikan will target you.

2. The reason many chikan do what they do is because they get away with it. Many females in Japan are riding the trains alone. Japanese rail lines are notoriously quiet. Well, when a woman is being groped, she typically remains quiet. The best thing you can do if you will not be vocal is to stare at your chikan. Start from the feet and slowly work your angry gaze up to his face. This action should make others take notice. If he does not cease grabbing you, pinch or scratch his hand. If that does not work, they say you should next politely (only in Japan, lol) tell your accuser to, “Please stop touching me.” As I mentioned, since the trains are quiet, people will hear your request and they will turn their eyes toward the chikan, making him nervous- which should cause him to get off at the next stop.

3. If you are with friends, make sure the friend knows you are being touched by a chikan. As a witness, you and your friend have the law on your side and you can take the chikan to a station worker. Since this is Japan, you won’t really see citizens resisting the law and thus, the chikan should comply with your request to resolve the issue with station authorities.

Aside from the steps above, during certain hours, women can ride in ‘Women Only’ cars on Japan’s rail lines. These provide women with a chikan free environment during rush hours.

I wonder what type of man gets off by groping women like this. It’s a sick thing and it is not limited to Japanese men. I’ve heard from women who say they have been groped on trains in India, London and New York. You men who do this are sick bastards and if I ever see it, I’m punching first and asking questions later.

Have you ever experienced a chikan? What would you do if a chikan ever grabbed you?

Hope you learned something new by reading this post. Peace!

Omg seriously?! I would turn on that a**hole and give him a can of whoopa**! While being scared sh*tless at the same time. Haha. I had no idea. That makes me a little nervous for Japan. I got grabbed during Holi in India. Not the most pleasant feeling but apparently its a given since its Holi.

      What is Holi, Kieu?
How’s your trip going? I wish I was going to be in Japan at the same time as you and G. But we might find ourselves in another Asian location at the same time.

Holi is a indian festival where, people play with color and water. But it has become an excuse for unruly, downright bad, despicable, rowdy behavior, so your friend got caught in it. It is best to avoid unfamiliar places/streets during the festival of Holi – it is best to stay in indoors.

Sad that happened to you. Holi has degraded a lot into “anything goes” bad behavior for notorious elements.

Thanks for the heads up. I don’t know if I’d be able to keep from yelling if that happened to me but I’ll try to remember your advice if (when) I find myself in Japan.

If you come here, I’ll protect you. When the trains get crowded, I often put on my “angry black male” face. That scares the bejeesus out of them, lol.

Ugh! I’ve heard of people having problems on the metro in Santiago, but that someone would have a blog about it somehow makes it even worse. Forget looking and politely asking, if some guy were to grab my ass on the metro I’d be yelling loud enough that the whole train would be well aware of the problem!

What’s worse is that his wasn’t the only diary type blog I discovered. Most of the others were in Kanji so I could not translate them. It’s a sick fetish these men have and most will go unpunished because of the system in Japan.

I’ve experienced “chikan” in NYC! We have a serious street and train harassment problem here and it gets worse as the weather gets warmer. Actually, I have several street and train harassment stories as do my girlfriends and colleagues, but I’ll spare the details. Just know that I take full advantage of the fact that NYC culture is NOT polite, aka I’ve cursed out, punched and kicked my fair share of perverts, sad to say. I wonder why NYC hasn’t gotten on the “women only” train cars yet. We surely need it.

Thank you for the comment Gangstarrgirl!
Do you think the NYC transit authority could afford to have women’s only trains?
The men that you’ve had try touching you, do most fall into the same demographic?

Nice post, good suggestions! I got chikan’d once but I didn’t resist since it was a woman and I was too shocked to respond. As for when I come across these Japanese guys plying their trade, I do interfere occasionally if it’s happening close to me.

Thank you for the comment. I enjoy your site Locohama.
Wow, you were chikaned by a woman? I heard that it is a fantasy for many men to be chikaned by an attractive woman.
What do you do to interfere when you see it happen?
